Cochlear Implant Programme

It is a privilege to address you today as the Chief Operating Surgeon of the Cochlear Implant Programme at Swastik ENT Centre & Hospital. I would like to share our vision, surgical experience, and commitment towards restoring hearing and transforming lives through cochlear implantation.

For a child, the ability to hear is the gateway to speech, education, and social development. For an adult, hearing represents communication, confidence, employment, and quality of life. Severe to profound hearing loss affects not only the individual but also the entire family. Fortunately, with advances in medical science, cochlear implantation has become one of the most successful procedures in restoring functional hearing.

A cochlear implant is much more than a surgical device—it is an opportunity for a new beginning.

While hearing aids amplify sound, cochlear implants bypass the damaged sensory cells of the inner ear and directly stimulate the auditory nerve, allowing the brain to interpret sound. The surgery itself is highly specialized, but its success depends equally on proper patient selection, meticulous surgical technique, precise device programming, intensive rehabilitation, and continuous family support.

At Swastik ENT Centre & Hospital, we have developed a comprehensive cochlear implant programme that emphasizes excellence at every stage of treatment. Every patient undergoes a detailed evaluation including advanced audiological testing, radiological imaging, speech and language assessment, medical examination, and counselling. This multidisciplinary evaluation ensures that each patient receives the most appropriate treatment.

As the operating surgeon, my foremost responsibility is to perform the procedure with maximum precision while preserving the delicate structures of the inner ear. We employ modern surgical techniques designed to achieve complete electrode insertion with minimal trauma, thereby optimizing hearing outcomes and preserving residual hearing whenever possible.

However, surgery is only one chapter in the patient’s journey. The real transformation begins after activation of the implant. Regular mapping sessions, dedicated auditory-verbal therapy, speech rehabilitation, and continuous parental participation are the pillars of long-term success. It is inspiring to witness children who had never heard a single sound begin responding to their parents’ voices, uttering their first words, and eventually attending mainstream schools.

Early diagnosis and intervention

One of our major objectives is to promote early diagnosis and early intervention. Every newborn should undergo hearing screening, and any child with delayed speech or poor response to sound should receive prompt audiological evaluation. The earlier we intervene, the better the chances of achieving normal speech and language development.

Our vision extends beyond surgery. We are committed to creating awareness among parents, teachers, pediatricians, and primary healthcare workers regarding childhood hearing loss. We also strive to assist eligible families in accessing government-supported cochlear implant programmes and rehabilitation services so that financial limitations never become a barrier to treatment.

I firmly believe that every deaf child deserves the opportunity to hear, speak, learn, and achieve their full potential.
